Vegetation indices have become a key tool in precision agriculture thanks to modern technology and the ability to monitor the current state of vegetation. These indices are the result of the analysis of the relationships between the different wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation that reflect from plants. Wavelength reflectance can offer valuable information on plant health, which is useful for a number of applications, including variable rate fertilization and pesticide application.

Many vegetation indices exist, but only a few have real practical applications in modern agriculture. These indices produce dimensionless values that are calculated from the reflectance of various wavelengths, including Blue, Green, Red, Red-edge, NIR and SWIR. This data can be obtained through satellite imagery or by unmanned means such as drones. Proper use of these indices can lead to cost savings and greener farming.
